About the role
Are you an experienced communications leader? Do you have the drive and ability to shape a new team and Communications strategy?
If so, Wokingham Borough Council have the role you’ve been waiting for.
Here at Wokingham, we understand the importance of having pro-active communication and engagement with our workforce, residents and other Partner organisations. Because of this, we are investing in our Communications, Marketing and Engagement service to provide additional capacity and bring all of our specialists into one team.
This is a pivotal position, in which you will be influential at the highest level. You will ensure the Council delivers high impact communications at all levels.
You will have the chance to shape our brand from the ground up and be responsible for maintaining a clear commitment to effective and honest communications with our residents and workforce. All the while, building our national voice with central government and other key organisations.
There couldn’t be a better time for you to join us as we are already in Phase two of our 21stCentury Council transformation programme and we are extremely proud of what has been achieved so far. Being in a small but busy unitary authority means you will really have the chance to get stuck in and leave your mark on our community. You will be able to shape our future by developing a new and more strategic approach to communications and marketing across the council.
You will have a proven track record in delivering successful communications, including developing strategy, organisational branding and raising the quality of resident, partner and/or employee engagement.
In addition to this, you will be a skilled influencer who is adept at managing complex political relationships. Finally, your leadership skills, foresight and vision will enable you to shape our communications, marketing and engagement offering whilst developing, nurturing and managing your newly formed team.
We are committed to working collaboratively and endorse a coaching style of management in which everyone can thrive and succeed. You will find this is a great place to work and to develop your career. You will enjoy the friendly, open and supportive culture, as well as benefiting from our family friendly policies. These include flexible hours, generous leave entitlement and the ability to work from home on a regular basis. Wokingham Borough Council is a unitary authority employing just over a 1000 staff. We are a highly desirable place to live, providing an excellent quality of life, access to high performing schools, and easy access to major airports and motorways, and all within an hour’s drive of London. The Council is delivering on ambitious growth plans, as we regenerate our town centre, and oversee delivery of over 13,000 new homes and associated infrastructure (new roads, schools, leisure facilities and country parks). However, we face a challenge as we balance the need for new homes against the protection of our local rural and semi-rural environment. A key challenge for us is to help our residents understand the need for new homes, and the work that the council is doing to secure the necessary infrastructure that comes with these. This needs to be balanced with ensuring that our voice is heard in central government to attract investment, and resist inappropriate development.
This new role, as our Lead Specialist in Communications, Marketing and Engagement will play a vital role in ensuring that these messages are conveyed effectively to a wide range of audiences.
